Signs and Symptoms
Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, is a chronic bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae. The symptoms may not appear until 3 to 5 years after infection and can be divided into two main types: tuberculoid and lepromatous.
*Tuberculoid Leprosy*
- A few numb, pale skin patches or rashes
- Enlarged nerves
- Muscle weakness
*Lepromatous Leprosy*
- Widespread skin rashes and nodules
- Enlarged lymph nodes
- Disfigurement of the face, ears, and hands
- Loss of eyebrows and eyelashes
- Numbness and muscle weakness
Risk Factors
- *Close contact*: Prolonged close contact with an untreated infected person increases the risk.
- *Weakened immune system*: People with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS or taking immunosuppressive medications, are more susceptible.
- *Poor sanitation and hygiene*: Living in areas with poor sanitation and hygiene increases the risk.
- *Malnutrition*: Malnutrition can weaken the immune system, making one more susceptible.
